A Little Taste of Robe
If there's one thing that says Robe, it has to be crayfish.
Here on South Australia's beautiful Limestone Coast, the ocean is part of everyday life. Robe sits on the edge of Guichen Bay, surrounded by rugged coastline, beautiful beaches and the wild Southern Ocean; so, it's little wonder that fishing has always been such an important part of life here.
And one of our most treasured local catches? Southern rock lobster, or as we like to call them, crays. The season has now begun, so now is the time to get your lobsters fresh from the ocean to your plate.
Robe is part of South Australia's Southern Zone rock lobster fishery, where commercial fishers harvest southern rock lobster using pots. It's a fishery that stretches from the Murray Mouth all the way to the Victorian border.
There's something special about enjoying seafood when you know where it comes from.
The boats heading out from the coast, the cray pots, the salty air and the people who have made their living from these waters all form part of Robe's story.
And then there's the eating!
You don't need to do too much with a good cray. A little butter, a squeeze of lemon and good company is pretty hard to beat.
For many of us, crayfish brings back memories of summer days, Christmas lunches, long afternoons around the table and that unmistakable feeling of being on the coast.
That's what we love about food from our region.
It's not just what's on the plate; it's the place, the people and the stories behind it.
Here in Robe, we're lucky enough to have all three.
A wild coastline. A proud fishing community. And some pretty spectacular seafood.
Fresh southern rock lobster is undoubtedly one of our local stars, but there’s so much more to discover. From local seafood and regional produce to wood-fired pizza, long lunches, great coffee and relaxed pub meals, Robe has developed a food scene that feels very much like the town itself laid-back, welcoming and full of character.
And then there’s the wine.
The nearby Mount Benson wine region is right on our doorstep, with its cool coastal climate producing wines that pair beautifully with the food of the Limestone Coast. Around Robe and Mount Benson you'll find family-owned wineries and cellar doors where you can slow down, enjoy a tasting and perhaps settle in for a platter and a glass of something local.
We love that you can spend the morning by the water, wander through town, stop for a good coffee, visit a cellar door in the afternoon and finish the day with fresh seafood and a glass of South Australian wine.
It's not about rushing from one thing to the next.
It's about sitting a little longer, eating something delicious and enjoying where you are.
And really, isn't that what a holiday in Robe is all about?
Good food.
Good wine.
Fresh seafood.
Beautiful coastline.
And plenty of time around the table with people you love.
That's a little taste of Robe. ❤️
